Kromac - Back To The Drawing Board

Before I start talking about Kromac I'll mention that I am looking at running mini tournaments on a friday night at hall of heroes. Small points, quick rounds, 3 games in a night. It will either be 35 points or 20-25 points with some funky rules, like highlander or mangled metal/tooth and claw. So far there has been interest from the Campbelltown crew, if the Wollongong guys are reading this and would be interested let me know.

The first and most important thing to recognize before you start tinkering with a list that has had a lot of success is to recognise that the problem is you. The list is good, you aren't making improvements you are changing it to do something different. It's not even an issue of the list not being your playstyle, you just have not been able to master the playstyle of the list or in some situations you want a list that does something different to cover a weakness in your pairing.

In this case I want a Kromac list with more scenario presence so I can see two different ways to do that.

1. Get scenario pieces - put some models in the list that are good at holding zones. I have two ideas in that regard, winter arguses (probably terrible but I'm going to play it and see) and Skinwalkers (probably pretty good with inviolable resolve, maybe not fast enough).

2. Get a screen - Basically satyxis raiders. I want a unit that can push forwards and buy me table position so that I can then give it up warpath/sprinting without losing on scenario. Unfortunately due to a slight oversight you can't take satyxis raiders in circle. You can however take blood trackers, add in a witch doc croc and they can really get forwards, a few can survive and just hold off your opponent from flooding the zone so that your wolves can happily yoyo up to them and back to safety.

My thoughts before testing:

Winter argus - actually quite difficult to kill with DEF 15 especially if it can find some terrain in the zone and get it's animus up. It gives me the added benefit of allowing Kromac to man mode. He can put inviolable resolve and winter coat on himself for 4 and still camp a few fury so that he can beast out when hit and go to ARM 21. The issues I can see is that they aren't going to kill much and are probably only going to buy me an extra turn of not having to leave anything important in the zone. Still I think it's janky, they have the crit stationary spray which is interesting and with two sprays might actually get some infantry. I want to give it a go before I dismiss it.

Skinwalkers - SPD 5 is the issue. I can leave the Woldstalkers in the list but that then leaves Kromac with only Ghettorix and a stalker (and his trusty old gorax). They'll get into zones but they don't buy me any table position. Also I doubt cryx will have much trouble removing them even with inviolable resolve.

Blood trackers - I'm already starting to lean this way because I think they have the most versatility here. I can play the old style of list and have them sit back and shoot to help me clear infantry (and to put some more damage on heavies) or I can use them to jam forwards and buy table position. Witch doc croc is essential here because this is going to be my Cryx match up and undead/fearless really help with that but also tough makes the screen just that little bit more survivable and helps the wolves really get stuff done. One of the main issues here is points. If I take everything I want in this list I get to 51 points:

Faction: Circle Orboros
Casters: 1/1
Points: 51/50
Kromac the Ravenous (*4pts)
* Gorax (4pts)
* Ghetorix (11pts)
* Warpwolf Stalker (10pts)
* Warpwolf Stalker (10pts)
Shifting Stones (2pts)
* Stone keeper (1pts)
Shifting Stones (2pts)
Tharn Bloodtrackers (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Nuala the Huntress (2pts)
Druid Wilder (2pts)
Gatorman Witch Doctor (3pts)

There isn't a lot I can drop either. I think it has to be a Stalker that gets downgraded to a Pureblood or maybe when he is finally released a riphorn.

So the lists I intend to trial are:

Kromac the Ravenous (*4pts)
* Gorax (4pts)
* Winter Argus (5pts)
* Winter Argus (5pts)
* Ghetorix (11pts)

Stoneward and 5 Woldstalkers (5pts)
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew (Leader and 1 Grunt) (1pts)

Circle Update

Kromac is pretty awesome.

35 Point Circle Armies

Pfffffffffffffffft.

Circle kind of sucks at 35 points. Here is what I have:

Circle Orboros
Standard Army
PCs: 35 / 35
19 models

[00] Kaya the Wildborne (0 / 6 WB)
[02]  >> Druid Wilder
[10]  >> Warpwolf Stalker
[10]  >> Warpwolf Stalker
[04]  >> Gorax
[02] Shifting Stones
[02] Shifting Stones
[01]  >> Stone Keeper
[01] Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew
[09] Gatorman Posse (4 grunts)

I think she is one of the few casters in circle who is happy to see the 35 point limit. I figure I give her a go and then use one of the 50 point casters I intend to take to CoO to get some practice with them. So:

Circle Orboros
Standard Army
PCs: 35 / 35
21 models

[00] Kromac the Ravenous (0 / 4 WB)
[02]  >> Druid Wilder
[10]  >> Warpwolf Stalker
[10]  >> Warpwolf Stalker
[04]  >> Gorax
[02] Blackclad Wayfarer
[05] Druid Stoneward & Woldstalkers
[02] Shifting Stones
[01]  >> Stone Keeper
[02] Shifting Stones
[01] Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew

That's a terrible list. Although when it comes to CoO I am feeling the Cassius love atm. He was pretty sweet at the last tournament. I'm also looking at Morvahna1, I think she does well against Cryx and can grind against heavies fairly well.

[04]  >> Gorax
[01] Gallows Grove
[01] Gallows Grove
[02] Shifting Stones

[09] Tharn Ravagers (5 grunts)
[02]  >> Tharn Ravager Chieftain
[08] Warpborn Skinwalkers (4 grunts)
[03]  >> Warpborn Alpha

First Game Cassius vs Goreshade1

I go first (I lost every roll for scenario in this tournament). I have never played Cassius before and I wrote this list the night before the tournament. I have played 5 games in total with circle as a faction before this tournament.

Turn 1:
Run forwards

Turn 2: Feat, hellmouth an objective, kill some banes and a brute thrall. I spend so much time reading the rules of rules on my cards that I need to take an extension even though I only make around 8 attacks.
Lose most of my ravagers to bane stuffs.

Turn 3: Decide I'm going to time out if I try to play so I'm going to just win. Arc a hellmouth through my gallows grove to kill the banes in front of Goreshade. Primal a stalker, double port it into melee with Goreshade and kill him.

Game 2 Morvahna2 vs Gorten

Turn 1: Run forwards. Gorten runs into double port range but carefully places the wall so I can't port into melee.

Turn 2: Purify the wall away. Carnivore and Primal the Stalker. Double Port and kill Gorten.

Game 3: Cassius vs Terminus

Turn 1: Run Forwards.

Turn 2: move up the tree, Arc Curse of Shadows onto Terminus. Primal the Stalker and double port him into melee range and kill Terminus.

So despite the lack of experience I had with circle my skill, and tactical nous and ability to learn on my feet saw me through the day. I came second on SOS because we only have time for 3 rounds when we do these things. I picked up the Woldwrath with my prize monies. I am going to greenstuff on a sideways hat and put him on a skateboard, then airbrush some graffiti on the side.

Meta Benders - Morvahna the Dawnshadow (Lady Goat)

What's the Problem

  • Her feat brings her entire army back to life except for beasts and shifting stones. She can place gallows groves in the middle of your tough units or behind your screening models to arc spells onto your warcaster. She can place War Wolves behind your caster, CRA them with Reeves and then have those War Wolves charge your caster with Gang and back strikes and boosted attack rolls (and the boost for charging). She can bring back a bunch of her own models around your caster then death knell them for ludicrous damage. Just having to kill her whole army twice though can be so much effort.
  • Whenever any model in her army misses or rolls bad damage she can hurt herself and reroll. She never has to live with bad dice and then the unit she has Carnivore on can attack and heal back all that damage she just suffered. She also heals whenever you kill any of her models.
  • Purification.
  • She has Ram and Life trader on her weapons. So she can charge a model use her goat (for +2 to hit but mount attacks cannot be boosted so you lose the extra damage dice), reroll if she misses, knock the opposing caster down then buy weaponmaster attacks if she suffers another damage. She can also push other models out of the way to get to the caster by using ram as she can buy mount attacks.
  • Fog Of War. Stalkers already circle's best beasts now have stealth. Gallows Groves - stealth. Reeves go to DEF 17.
She is an attrition monster, she will use scales of fate to make sure her models do more damage than they should then when you work through them she will feat to bring them back. Stalkers were bad enough with just sprint, with sprint and stealth and never failing to kill models because you get rid of tough and reroll misses or bad damage. And to top that all off if you need upkeeps you better be ready to cast them every turn and forget defensive upkeeps.

How to Deal
Non living models are ideal. All the hordes armies can bring the Gatorman Witch Doctor (except funnily enough the Farrow minion ones) and you should, actually you probably should in general. He ensures that you don't have to worry about command checks which can be randomly awful. That shuts down Carnivore and the bulk of her healing which hurts scales of fate as well. If you are a warmachine faction you can go jack heavy and if you are Cryx you don't have to worry. In general in addition to undead/warjacks/constructs you want a few boostable guns. If she hurts herself too much just start shooting at  her.

From there the next issue is her feat, for that you want to be able to remove models from play. There are a lot of game effects that can do this and they double up, helping you with Goatvanna and with recursion mechanics, things like the Spawning Vessel, Mechanithralls and Necrosurgeions, Shamblers and Alexia.

Be aware of the scenario. She is hard to jam out of a zone because she can bring models back into the zone but those models are often easier to remove. Also keep an eye on the assassination, force her to be careful how much of her life she is willing to spend.

Caster Recommendations
Cygnar: Haley2 with double Stormwall is a nightmare for her. Nemo2 doesn't look so great either, she will also struggle against Kraye and Darius (See Darius isn't a total loss against top tier casters!) (don't play Darius at a tournament).

Protectorate of Menoth: Go for the jack wall. In particular a jack wall with a bunch of guns. Feora2 is probably your best, Reznik and Feora1 can do it too, Harbinger can have a game.

Mercenaries. Bart + Galleon. The ARM (even 22 with purification) is a nightmare and the boosted gun port shots have no trouble with her infantry. Either Magnus,

Trollbloods: Doomshaper2 with a lot of beasts is ideal. Get their ARM up to 22, can purify away the krielstone bonus, snacking RFPs and you have no infantry to kill with Carnivore. That said any caster with Witch Doc Crocs for their infantry and a couple of dire trolls to RFP will do just fine. Even doomshaper1 does OK, runshapers are multi wound and fairly tough under the krielstone.

Legion: Not Kallus. Fog of war does nothing, shredders and scytheans and afflictors RFP and Legion loves going beast heavy. Even Lylyth with no RFP can do enough damage at range that it's probably still uphill for lady goat.

Minions: Poor minions. Pigs have slaughterhousers to remove those skinwalkers from play and the gators have the witch doc croc to make their troops non-living. You are going to have to deal with a fair amount of her crap. On the other hand though the only minion caster who really struggles is Midas as she will RFP his beasts and take away his feat. Carver beast heavy isn't bad, Rask with witch doc crocs can do the job, Maelok loves the undead spam, Barnabas can at least knock down her units which will buy you a turn.

Morvahna's Feat

Feat: Blood Sacrifice - Morvahna immediately suffers 1 or more damage points. This damage cannot be transferred. For each damage point she suffers, return one destroyed non-character living friendly Faction warrior model to play completely within Morvahnaʼs control area. Units cannot exceed the number of models that they had at the start of the game as a result of Blood Sacrifice. Place returned trooper models in formation with their original units. Returned models forfeit their actions the turn they return to play.
This is from Bell of Lost Souls and they also have Grim's feat which I assume they will spoil tomorrow.  As for Morvhana if she still has Restoration she is going to be amazing with Skinwalkers and they are some particularly beautiful models. She has Sac Pawn [faction warrior] in her primal form and I see no reason to take that away in her epic form so you'll probably still see Wolves of Orboros with her (though now I'm getting pretty deep into speculation).

I'm still excited about there being a light cav warlock. She is going to have a lot of movement, hopefully she has a few good offensive spells to really abuse that light cav move, or the ability to place clouds or forests. Getting a bit ahead of myself here, it's a bit sad how much more excited I am for this model than any of the warlocks from factions I actually play.

Also this:

First thought was Gobber mechanic but that looks like a dodgy arcane turbine on his back (like the generators warcasters use to control warjacks). A gobber warcaster I think is too much to hope for (plus I think then he'd have someone else carry his wagon) but I think it might be a Gobber Journeyman. That would be incredible. Regardless there is a lot I like about this model.

James Moorehouse Cancon

Cancon was last weekend, James Moorehouse took out Masters with his circle. I love looking at tournament winning lists and in particular James' lists. Anyway it was a US style event, you qualified for masters by winning one of the earlier events at the Con. James won The Usual to qualify, came second in last call (losing to the epic butcher doom reaver spam list) and won masters itself here are the lists:

My Comments on the lists:

Cassius - close to the Cassius list I want to play (been saying that I want to play Cassius for a while now). The only difference is I had a Wilder instead of a blackclad and a Woldwarden instead of a Feral. I think I like the Feral better now that you may have to deal with colossals.

Kruegar2 - With sprint on the Stalker and Ghettorix and telekinesis and druids and the feat you can hit and run really successfully here. Stormwall + that much shooting + beasts retreating looks painful. There are also so many assassination angles and other shenanigans you can pull with this list.

Kromac - Another caster I really want to play. So many shenanigans, lots of anti-colossal tools too (though none of the lists will auto lose to a colossal they are pretty well balanced). I'd have Ghettorix in this list, I assume character restrictions keep him out.

Baldur2 - now we get to the funky stuff. Megalith is needed to heal Baldur. Baldur can heal constructs and his feat ARM buffs the Woldwrath. His defensive schtick helps him get forward and Baldur can close out the game himself.

Morvhana - Once the UA comes out for the warpborn skinwalkers I would want them in her list at least at 50 points. At 35 recycling Bloodtrackers are going to be a massive pain, especially when they shoot and back up. Restoration on Ghettorix makes him tank very hard. Morvhana loses to anyone with purification so she is an excellent partner for Baldur2 who doesn't care at all about purification.

Cassius

This is Crump's list which he used to qualify for masters at GENCON. He also played Cassius in the masters where he came fourth but GENCON masters was 75 points.

Circle Orboros
Standard Army
PCs: 50 / 50
38 models

[00] Cassius the Oathkeeper (0 / 6 WB)
[00]  >> Wurmwood, Tree of Fate (Companion)
[10]  >> Warpwolf Stalker
[09]  >> Woldwarden
[04]  >> Gorax
[02] Shifting Stones
[01]  >> Stone Keeper
[02] Shifting Stones
[09] Tharn Ravagers (5 grunts)
[02]  >> Tharn Ravager Chieftain
[02] Saxon Orrik
[02] Farrow Bone Grinders (3 grunts)
[06] Farrow Slaughterhousers
[06] Farrow Slaughterhousers
[01] Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew

The bellows crew is important as you can use it to give the tree or the Stalker stealth. The woldwarden animus can do the same thing (generally you'll have the Woldwarden forward with the Stalker and the Bellows Crew back with Wurmwood). The Woldwarden does a similar job to the Gallows Groves, allowing you to get your spells out when you don't want to teleport otherwise the bone grinders give you extra spell range and you can move forward to cast your spells and teleport back. Tharn Ravagers are DEF 15 in a forest and ignore the terrain penalties to LOS and movement and can move through other models in the forest (both the one made by Cassius feat and the Woldwarden). The chieftain makes them POW 15 on the charge and gives them advance deployment. The other trick you can do in this list is that you can kill your own models for more souls on Wurmwood. In particular you can kill the bonegrinders.

I also think if you don't like slaughterhousers (or don't have them) you can take Nyss Hunters or Blood Trackers without losing a great deal as those are both spectacular units, they also give you another two points for another solo, you can actually drop Saxon Orrik as well as he's mainly there to give the slaughterhousers pathfinder and you have 4 points for two solos or a lord of the feast. The reason slaughterhousers are in there is because they are so toolboxy (to continue my trend of making up words). Take Down gets rid of soul collecting or corpse collecting shenanigans and stops tough, powerful charge makes them MAT 8 on a charge and if you put some damage on a beast/jack they become weaponmasters, they also have reach which again is very useful in some circumstances. That and they can hang back and give Cassius some much needed protection and they have tough so they can be a pain to get through.

Here's the 75 point list because what the hey:

Tharn Archers

Tharn Archers that are coming out next year. They'll be interesting especially as circle has some of the best ranged units in the game as it is (blood trackers and the shrimp), I expect them to do something funky.

Woldwrath

The Woldwrath has been spoiled in the latest no quarter (which I still won't get for 3-4 weeks, stupid Australia). I have been pretty worried about the gargantuans since the Mountain King was pre-released at lock and load but unlike the Mountain King the Worldwrath is actually pretty good.

I've decided to put the stats below and talk about them up here. It has spell ward which is good and it's bad, It stops Baldur2 from bringing it up to ARM 23 but it also means that your opponent can't hit it with parasite or crippling grasp or any of the other spells that could help you take it down. It's gun is high POW and has good range with auto hitting electric jumps and AOEs that don't deal damage when fired but remain in play and will kill single wound infantry on your opponents turn. The templates look useful but mostly the range and the POW make it a good gun. Next are the best two things about it, it's melee attacks and its animus. High P+S and with 4" knockdowns it's melee attacks are ridiculously good, it'll knockdown friend and foe so you have to be a little careful but the potential of the knockdowns is awesome. Lastly the animus, in a faction with druids (which have critical knockdown on their pulls too) and some great spell casting casters with good offensive spells is awesome. It's such a massive distance, and this model wants to get forward and into melee.

It has drawbacks too, 20 points are two warpwolf stalkers, though it has 8 more damage points and a point of ARM more than the Mountain King an enraged bronzeback will still bring it down in a single turn and as a construct only the Baldurs can heal it. I think it's well balanced and playable, it will be really good in some lists and too expensive in others.

Here it is:

FURY : 4
FA: 2
PC: 20
Construct and Spell Ward
SPD: 5
STR: 16
MAT: 6
RAT: 5
DEF: 7
ARM: 20
DAMAGE:56

Lightning Strike
RNG: 14 RoF: 1 AoE: - Pow: 15
Damage Type Electricity
Storm Generator- When a model is directly hit with this weapon, center a 3" AOE on it. You can then have lightning arc to the nearest model within 4" of the model hit, ignoring the attacking model. The model the lightning arc to suffers an unboostable POW 10 electrical damage roll. After this damage roll is resolved, center a 3" AOE on the model the lightning arced to. The AOES remain in play for one round. Models entering or ending their activations in an AOE suffer a POW 10 electrical damage roll.

Stone Fistx2
Pow: 3 P+S: 19
Open Fist
(Not magical weapons like the other constructs)
Earth Shaker- When an enemy model is directly hit by an attack made with this weapon, center a 4" AOE on the model directly hit. Models in the AOE are knocked down.

Animus
Druid's Wrath
Cost:2 RNG: Self
Friendlly Faction models gain an additional die on magic attack rolls targeting enemy models within 10" of this model. Druid's wrath lasts for one turn.
